Members of the Pompton Lakes Board of Adjustment reviewed the board's 2024 variance report and discussed whether recurring variance requests pointed to needed changes in local ordinances.
At the March 25 meeting, a board member said they had previously asked whether certain approvals were contingent on state permits — specifically approvals that required New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) sign-off — and asked for greater clarity going forward to inform the board's decision-making.
Board members agreed the variance report is intended for the governing body to show themes from the past year. Several members identified setbacks, fencing and similar dimensional variances as recurring topics, but no one on the record moved to recommend ordinance changes based solely on this year's report. The board said if patterns emerge that could justify a change, it should be discussed with the planning board and governing body.
The board did not take a formal vote on policy changes; the report will be forwarded to Colliers Engineering and the governing body for further review, as recorded at the meeting.
