Libraryfestival request tabled pending police review of planned gun salute and procession

The Village of Fredonia on March 17 tabled a request from the Darwin Barker Library for exclusive use of East and West Barker Common and nonexclusive use of the West Alley Municipal Lot for an event on June 3.
The trustees said they will consult the police chief about a planned gun salute and the proposed procession route before approving the request. Library representatives had asked for use of the commons from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; the board specifically asked for the chief's input on the planned rifle salute and on whether the carriage procession would require temporary traffic controls.
The request was placed on hold while the office of the chief of police reviews public-safety implications and confirms whether road or crowd notifications or permits will be required. Trustees noted that ceremonial firings in parks have raised questions about notice and coordination with emergency services.
The library organizers were told the board would follow up after the police review. The item will return to the trustees for a formal vote after staff and the chief provide recommended conditions or approvals.
