Ogdensburg council approves purchase of new fire engine, chief cites significant savings on a demo unit

City Council on April 11 approved a resolution authorizing purchase of a demonstration pumper fire engine from Shakerley Fire Truck Sales at a cost not to exceed $770,000, and authorized the city manager to execute a purchase agreement and related documents.
Council discussion identified financing options as either a USDA (U.S. Department of Agriculture) loan or a bond anticipation note. The motion as presented noted the price includes delivery, trade-in, lettering and negotiated upgrades. During the meeting the fire chief said he and Captain Rickett negotiated the demo unit and had requested about a dozen specification changes; all but one requested change were accommodated.
The chief told council that comparable new apparatus currently carry estimated lead times and prices significantly higher than the demo price—troop discussions statewide showed new-engine estimates “1.1 to 1.5 million dollars.” Councilors praised the chief and Captain Rickett for saving taxpayer dollars and supported the purchase; roll call recorded unanimous approval from the members present.
