Fredonia approves MOU with New York State for firefighter training programs

The Village of Fredonia’s board unanimously approved a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the New York State Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services, Office of Fire Prevention and Control, to provide training programs for village career and volunteer firefighters.
The resolution, read in full at the Jan. 31 special meeting, authorizes the mayor to execute an MOU permitting the state academy or local DHSES-OFPC personnel to provide required training. Trustees voted aye by roll call with no recorded dissent.
Why it matters: The MOU formalizes access to state-provided training and local delivery options. Fire Department leaders said the requirement will be annual and necessary even if individual training approvals are delayed for budgetary reasons.
The vote was unanimous. The Fire Chief noted that even though an earlier hire was denied, the village still must comply with state training prerequisites if it sends firefighters to state courses; one motion to send the prospective hire to basic training was tabled later in the meeting.
