Council schedules special meeting after Councilor Michael Weaver resigns effective March 10

Councilor Michael Weaver submitted a letter resigning from the Ogdensburg City Council effective March 10, the city clerk read into the record, and council moved forward with the charter-required vacancy process.

The resignation letter, read aloud by City Clerk Kathy, said Weaver had relocated outside city limits for family reasons and that he remained “an advocate for the city.” Mayor Michael Tooley thanked Weaver on behalf of the council for his service.

Under Article 3, Section C10 of the city charter, the clerk must notify the vacancy committee that a council seat is vacant and that the committee must meet within five days of receiving notice to solicit nominations. The committee is required to recommend three eligible and willing persons to council at least seven days before the meeting at which council will act.

City staff told council the vacancy committee must submit its list of three nominees no later than March 31. Council voted to schedule a special meeting for Monday, April 7 at 6 p.m. in council chambers to take only the vote to fill the vacancy; once a nominee is selected the person will be sworn in immediately to serve through Dec. 31, 2025, because the vacancy occurred before July 25 of the current year.

Councilors who spoke during the agenda expressed appreciation for Weaver’s work on community activities and suggested he remain engaged in local events even after his resignation.

The clerk will notify the vacancy committee and post the special meeting details as required by the charter and state open‑meetings law.
