Board reads multiple policy updates; most are minor wording and cross-reference edits

The Radford City School Board on March 25 conducted a first reading of multiple policy updates provided by the Virginia School Boards Association template and staff review.
Board members and staff said most changes are technical: diction, semantics, capitalization and cross-reference updates. The board packet listed numerous policies with minor edits, including BF (facilities planning), GBEA, GBN and others. Staff noted that policy IKG will be deleted and absorbed into other policies. The board will treat the materials as a first reading; the item will be an action item at the next meeting.
During the review a board member questioned language in the school-bus-driver section (policy GDQ) that asks for "statements signed by 2 reputable persons ... that the person is of good moral character." The board member asked whether the word "moral" is unnecessarily subjective and suggested language such as "character" or "character and integrity." Another board member noted that references to "reputable individuals" in the same section may be dated and asked staff to consult with the VSBA on acceptable wording and whether local revisions are permitted.
Staff agreed to research the wording and report back before the next meeting. The board did not vote on policy changes at the March 25 meeting; the policies remain in the packet for formal action at a later date.
