The Radford City School Board voted March 25 to approve the division's proposed fiscal year 2025–26 budget, citing only minor recalculations tied to updated state figures.
Board members heard a presentation from division staff that noted a recent state "Calc tool" update changed the division's per-student error amount and reduced additional funding in the proposal. "That number did change due to the fact that the Calc tool did come out and provided more information in regards to error per student amount," a staff presenter said during the budget review. The presenter said that change affected the cost the division pays for the regional virtual school and was reflected in the baseline funding figures.
The presentation also noted an adjustment to a line described in the meeting as "$4.52" in the division-wide facility upgrades line and flagged that the governor's budget actions that morning could still alter the final state allocation. School officials said they will use the current numbers until a final state budget is signed and that the division expects a new Calc tool after the state budget is finalized.
Finance materials included a note that the division is budgeting to absorb an 8% increase in health-insurance costs rather than passing that increase to staff. The presenter said the bottom-line total "has jumped into the fifties," referring to the overall figure reported in the budget summary; the presentation did not specify units in the meeting transcript.
After board discussion the board president called for a motion to approve the budget as presented; a motion was made and approved by voice vote: "All those in favor, signify by saying aye. Aye. And opposed? Alright. The budget has crossed 1 hurdle." Board members said the division will present the budget to the city in the first or second week of April.
If state changes require amendments the board said it will revisit the document. The board did not release an itemized roll-up of every small adjustment in open session but left the detailed budget worksheets in the board packet and on the division website for public review.
