Southampton schools to participate in Virginia State University summer transportation STEM institute; five district slots approved

The program, a partnership presented by Dr. Bellevue, will provide participating students a $200 stipend at the end of the program and day trips to sites including a local air museum and a truck and tractor museum. Virginia State granted Southampton five of the program's 15 total slots; the district will provide transportation to and from the university during the program days. School staff said the program is a day program (not overnight) and parents will pick up students at the home school after each day.
Superintendent Dr. Shannon explained the institute aligns with the district's goals to expand learning opportunities and community partnerships. The application deadline for families is March 31; officials said they will accept a one-page application and maintain a waiting list if district slots fill.
Board member (motion) and a second moved approval; the motion passed with a voice vote. The board directed administration to proceed with enrollment and logistics for the five slots allocated to the district.
