Students and CTE programs spotlighted as Poquoson recognizes athletes and showcases career-technical projects

Poquoson City Public Schools used its March 18 meeting to recognize student achievements across athletics, music and career-technical education and to highlight the district's CTE pathways.
Superintendent and staff recognized Jude Purdy as the district's March senior of the month and congratulated multiple state champions from Poquoson High School wrestling, track and swimming programs. The meeting included announcements of All-Virginia choral placements and other honors.
Instructional Director Jennifer Ives (presenting on CTE) described Career and Technical Education courses offered at the middle and high school levels and the district's partnership with New Horizons Career & Technical Education Center. She reported roughly 230 middle-school enrollments and about 420 high-school enrollments in CTE courses and said 49 students were enrolled in specialized programs at New Horizons that lead to industry-recognized certifications and dual-credit opportunities.
Three students then presented brief remarks and project summaries:
- Brandon Milner (PHS Engineering and Drawing) described a boat design project for a local SNAME competition; he discussed using AutoCAD Inventor for 3D modeling and calculations for weight and center of gravity. - Chloe Dunn (New Horizons Physical and Occupational Therapy) said the program offers hands-on lab practicals, employability grading and a pathway to a physical/occupational therapy aide certification that she expects will help in college. - Ian Price (New Horizons HVAC) described hands-on HVAC coursework, brazing copper, wiring systems, refrigerant recovery, and SkillsUSA competition success.
Why it matters: The CTE program provides students job-ready skills and industry credentials while district recognitions publicly acknowledge student achievements that reflect both curricular and extracurricular programs.

Board members praised the students and CTE staff; the instructional team noted the district's recent VDOE highlight for CTE month and thanked Kim Montalvo, director of accountability, for program coordination.
