The district's maintenance supervisor briefed the board April 14 on completed and planned projects across Greensville County Public Schools, highlighting a two‑phase covered walkway and security barrier at the high school, decorative playground fencing at the elementary school, extensive upgrades at the bus garage, elevator modernizations and multiple HVAC and access‑control improvements.
"We have finished getting our plans drawn up for our covered walkway," the maintenance supervisor told the board, describing a phased approach: Phase 1 installs a covered walkway from the bus lane to the band room and a secondary covered path between the Vo‑Tech and main building so students can move between buildings in the rain; Phase 2 adds a tasteful security barrier that would enclose the campus perimeter and limit entry to gates and monitored doors. The presenter said the plans specify materials (metal types, post depth, concrete specifications) and that the district plans to put the project out to bid with a preference for local contractors within a reasonable radius.
The supervisor said the district installed decorative aluminum fencing around Greensville Elementary School playgrounds with ten gates to allow quick egress, and upgraded the bus garage perimeter to an 8‑foot fence with three strands of barbed wire, plus a wider gate for large vehicles. He noted the district is modernizing all elevators across the three schools (elementary to be completed first), installing new intercoms to allow system‑wide calls from central offices, replacing an AC unit in the band room, buying eight new HVAC units for math and science halls, and removing an internal wall at the bus garage to create three service bays for bus maintenance.
Board members asked about access and emergency egress; the supervisor said exit doors will have panic hardware so occupants can exit but cannot enter without authorization and that exits will include buzzers for controlled inbound access. The maintenance supervisor also emphasized funding sources: "These improvements are done through construction funds — it's not the local budget," he said, noting many projects are completed in‑house by district staff to reduce costs.
Administrators said remaining items will be bid or scheduled for summer installation and that they will provide a list of projects and status updates for the board to track progress.
