Summary
Superintendent Dr. Edwards updated the board on corrective-action work required under a memorandum of understanding with the Virginia Department of Education, reporting progress on instructional supports, special education compliance rates and district-wide initiatives intended to move schools toward full accreditation.
Greensville County Public Schools remains under a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Virginia Department of Education until all schools achieve full accreditation, Superintendent Dr. Edwards told the school board on April 14 as part of a monthly corrective-action update.
Dr. Edwards said the division has reorganized reporting to include chief academic officers and directors and described work in several priority areas: academic and student support (rigorous instruction, literacy leadership, summer learning and tutoring), special education compliance and administrative changes intended to strengthen leadership and governance. "Greensburg County Public Schools is under a memorandum of understanding with the Virginia Department of Education until all our schools are fully accredited," Dr. Edwards said.
On special education, the director of pupil personnel services reported compliance metrics the board requested: the division said eligibility compliance is at 99 percent and 98 percent of individualized education programs (IEPs) are compliant. The director also said curriculum adjustments and increased instructional time in core classes are being implemented to better serve students with disabilities, and that the division's Part B annual plan was complete and scheduled for the board's April vote (the board subsequently approved the plan during the action items).
The superintendent also reviewed academic supports across schools — including literacy coaching, strategic planning with external partners and expanded use of small-group instruction — and noted ongoing collaboration with the Berkeley Group, region leadership and VDOE liaisons. The board heard about targeted expectations: benchmark-based goals for math and science performance for students with disabilities in specified grades were discussed as part of the corrective plan's measures of progress.
Dr. Edwards closed the update by noting monthly reporting will continue and that the division intends to move items from the corrective plan under a broader "total leadership and governance" reporting structure that includes chief academic officers and other central-office leaders.
