Board to consider raising school board stipends after survey shows lowest regional pay

Staff cited Virginia Code § 22.1‑32(b) to explain timing: a locality may establish a salary increase before Dec. 31 in the year preceding an election or appointment so that increases become effective on July 1 if the election or appointment occurs before July 1, or on Jan. 1 of the following year if after June 30. Board members discussed the procedural awkwardness of voting to increase their own pay but agreed it merited formal consideration.
By consensus the board asked staff to place the matter on the June agenda for discussion and potential action, allowing members time to review comparative data and consider budget implications. No motion to change pay was made at the meeting.
