Improvement Association Head Start director reports 49 children enrolled, shares fall screening results and outreach activities

Representatives from the Improvement Association’s Head Start program gave the board a program update, reporting enrollment, screening results and family engagement activities.
Keisha Kelly, the program head, introduced Tracy Michalik, program manager, who said the Dinwiddie Head Start serves 49 students in four classrooms with four teachers, four teaching assistants and six support staff. Michalik reported the program conducted 119 home visits and 49 parent-teacher conferences this year and provided two field trips and one community event, with another community event planned for May.
Michalik summarized Teaching Strategies Gold fall outcomes across developmental domains and gave Virginia early literacy screener (VELL/PALS) fall-range results for 3- and 4-year-olds in areas such as alphabet knowledge, syllable segmentation and letter sounds. The transcript contains detailed fall percentages by domain and screener range; Michalik said the program will report outcomes again in winter and spring.
The program manager also described family engagement activities (home visits, parent-center events on financial literacy and physical/dental health) and thanked the school board, district staff and community volunteers. Kelly announced Head Start’s 60th anniversary and said transition events, enrollment and outreach for the coming year are underway; applications for three- and four-year-old slots are being accepted.
