Southside ISD boards approves $303,068.75 contract to resurface high school track

The Southside ISD Board of Trustees approved a $303,068.75 contract Monday to resurface the district high school track, awarding the work to Vibra World Sports, Ltd.
Board President Jesse Hernandez said the bid package called for $242,455 in base work plus a contingency. “The contingency is to address any unforeseen issues during the demolition of the track,” a purchasing representative told the board during the recommendation presentation.
The purchase was presented by the athletics department and the district purchasing staff. Coach Locker described the scope of work to the board, saying crews will “demolish, get rid of, kind of scrape up the foundation of the old track and the old surface. And then they have to lay the base down and then come over the cover, the top part, and they have to line it, stripe it, and do all the runways.” He said the district’s track is about 28 years old and has been patched multiple times.
The board considered four vendor proposals; the evaluation team ranked Vibra World Sports as the highest-ranked and lowest-cost bidder. The recommended contract includes a $60,613.75 contingency to cover unexpected foundation or demolition issues, and the district representative said any use of contingency funds would be validated before payment.
Trustee Solibares moved to approve the agreement; the motion carried after roll call. The board recorded five votes in favor and one abstention. The district noted the vendor provided a negotiated seven-year warranty on the work.
The athletics staff said work should take about three weeks once crews begin and that the resurfaced facility will support eight lanes and regulation field event areas for long jump, triple jump, high jump and pole vault. The district said resurfacing will allow it to host meets on campus and reduce the need to bus teams to off-site facilities.
The board did not set a specific start date at the meeting; staff said they will coordinate scheduling to avoid conflicts with school events and will return to the board if significant changes to scope or cost are required.
