Riverside trustees waive rental fee for library fair and approve $1,599 captioning device

Library representatives explained the $1,599 device is a portable tablet-like unit that provides closed-captioning of spoken remarks in real time, not an American Sign Language interpreter. Diane Silva and another library representative said the unit could be used at library programs and lent to township or village events. Trustee Clark moved to purchase the unit and Trustee Carroll seconded; the vote was unanimous.
Trustees asked for a demonstration after the device is obtained; library staff agreed to provide one. The board recorded both approvals in roll-call votes.
The decisions were framed as community-accessibility and partnership measures: the rental fee waiver reduces the library’s cost for a community event, and the captioning device is intended to expand access for patrons with hearing needs.
Trustees did not attach conditions to the device purchase beyond the library’s promise to share it with township or village events, and no additional appropriation was requested during the meeting.
