Board recognizes staff and students: Helping Hands awards, art and robotics achievements, and middle-school choir performance

Powhatan County School Board members spent part of their March 11 meeting recognizing staff and student achievements across the division.
Superintendent Dr. Teigen introduced the "Helping Hands" program, a division-wide recognition run by human resources that allows students, parents, colleagues and supervisors to nominate staff who "inspire, empower, or innovate." The board recognized several winners in March: Bruce Jarrell (custodial/HVAC work cited), Jill Dewey (recognized for assisting EMS with a student on Jan. 23) and Amy Whittle (credited with supportive outreach to a student navigating anxiety). Rachel Strickland was recognized for completing a VCU clinical faculty mentoring program, and Powhatan High School senior Annaleigh (Annalie) Cave received a Scholastic Art & Writing silver key for a whale-shark sculpture.
The board also heard about the Powhatan High School robotics team "Spear," which the presenter said won first place at a Harrisonburg FTC qualifier, advanced to the Chesapeake FTC championships in Silver Spring, Md., and finished the season with a reported 12-3 record and regional and state placements discussed by staff. The presenter credited coach Mr. Beasley and the student builders for the achievement.
Powhatan Middle School students and staff presented in honor of Music in Our Schools Month. The middle-school chorus, led by Miss Snyder, performed a short acapella piece that included harmony exercises for the board and audience. Middle-school staff also described student-leadership activities including a tab collection for the Ronald McDonald House (more than 97 pounds collected to date), charity donations from a student leadership-sponsored fall dance, spirit weeks and a peer mentoring idea that the school is exploring.
Board members thanked staff and students for their work, praised the robotics and choir performances and congratulated award winners. The recognitions concluded before the public-comment period and budget discussion.
