The Powhatan County School Board moved into a closed session at its April 2025 workshop to discuss personnel matters, student admissions and discipline, and to consult with legal counsel, a board member said.
Board Chair (unnamed in the transcript) called the workshop to order and asked for approval of the meeting agenda, noting that all board members were present along with the superintendent and clerk. Powhatan County School Board member Mrs. Hurt then made a motion to enter closed session under state statute.
"Yes. I recommend and make a motion to enter into closed session pursuant to Code 2.2-3711(a)(1) to discuss the employment, resignation and leave of specific employees; pursuant to Code 2.2-3711(a)(2) and (4) to discuss the admission and discipline of specific students; and 2.2-3711(a)(7) to consult with legal counsel and briefings by staff," Powhatan County School Board member Mrs. Hurt said.
The chair asked for a vote; board members responded "Aye," and no opposition was recorded in the public transcript. The chair then announced the board was entering closed session.
The transcript records the statutory citations as "Code 2.2-3711" and the three exemption categories cited in the motion. A portion of the motion near the end of the staff/legal-consultation clause is unclear in the transcript and could not be transcribed cleanly; the meeting record does not provide additional public detail about the subject of that consultation.
The board proceeded into closed session; no public votes on policy, budget or other agenda items were recorded in the publicly available portion of the transcript prior to the closed session.
The workshop record shows the board handled the procedural step to enter closed session; any actions taken or decisions made during the closed session were not disclosed in the public portion of the transcript.
