On a unanimous vote April 1, the Eagle Pass City Council approved the first reading of an ordinance that would require domestic-violence resource signage in local businesses’ restrooms.
City staff described the measure as a low-cost, proactive step following a recent tragic event and said the ordinance would allow the city to require new businesses to post signage and to work with existing businesses to install resource signs. Staff said local organizations have offered to help fund the signs.
Council discussion emphasized making the signs discreet and useful: a councilmember suggested adding QR codes to signage so people could save information on their phones quickly and discreetly. Staff also proposed linking signage resources to the city website; council members noted a website revamp is underway and could host resource links.
Councilman Diaz made the motion to approve; Mayor Pro Tem Davis seconded. The first reading passed unanimously. Staff said details such as the responsible department and rollout will be finalized and brought back for final reading.
No penalties or enforcement schedule were finalized at first reading; staff said they would return with implementation details.
