Eagle Pass certifies election results; two council members sworn in and mayor pro tem reappointed

The Eagle Pass City Council on May 12 read into the record and approved the official vote totals from the May 3 general election, then administered oaths of office to two winners and reappointed the mayor pro tem.

During the meeting Mayor Salinas read the vote counts for mayoral and council races. The recorded totals included: Monica J. Crews (mayor) 1,762 votes; Jesus Casas (mayor) 892 votes; Aron Valdez (mayor) 1,857 votes. Council totals included Elias Diaz (place 2) 2,369 votes; Jorge Sierra (place 2) 2,043 votes; Jessica Ray Ramon (place 4) 2,207 votes; Tessie Hansen Uy (place 4) 582 votes; Alberto Rodriguez (place 4) 1,620 votes. The total early votes were 3,284; election day votes 1,958; total votes cast 4,542.

Councilman Garcia moved to accept the canvas of those results and Councilman Diaz seconded; the motion passed unanimously with four votes in favor (Mayor Pro Tem Billy Davis was absent). After certification, staff administered oaths of office. Councilman Elias Diaz and Councilwoman Jessica Ray Ramon each repeated the official oath and offered brief remarks. Councilman Elias Diaz said the win “is not necessarily for me. It's for the people of Eagle Pass,” and pledged to continue work on infrastructure, social services and public health. Councilwoman Jessica Ray Ramon thanked supporters and said, “I will be putting our community always. I'm here to be your voice.”

The council then moved to organizational business. Councilman Diaz made a motion to reappoint Councilman Billy Davis as mayor pro tem; Councilman Garcia seconded and the reappointment passed unanimously.

Why it matters: Certification completes the formal tally for the May 3 election and the oaths put the newly elected members into office. The reappointment of a mayor pro tem keeps the council's leadership team intact while Mayor Pro Tem Davis remains absent from the meeting.
