Caroline schools read policy additions to address generative AI and Google services consent

Caroline County Public Schools presented a read Thursday proposing additions to two acceptable-use policies to cover generative AI and to add explicit consent language for Google services used by students.
Mister Robinson, who led the presentation, said the proposal adds generative-AI outputs to examples of prohibited content and lists six guidelines for permitted use — including educational alignment, ethics, privacy protections and training requirements. He also described companion regulations: GAB TechR (personnel) and IIBEA TechR (students), which the division would require employees and students/parents to sign.
The presenter noted the student regulation includes consent for Google services such as Google Maps and Google Earth, explaining that some Google services require parental consent for users under 18. “Moving forward, adding consent to allow Google services will allow those services to be turned back on and used for educational purposes,” he said, adding that students whose families decline consent would be provided alternative instructional activities.
Board members asked about filtering and controls for Google services; staff said the district controls available services via the Google Admin console for educational accounts. No policy vote was taken; the item was presented as a read and will return for approval at a future meeting.
