Smithville aldermen receive initial review of accessory dwelling units; planning work to continue

The Smithville Board of Aldermen was told this month that the Planning and Zoning Commission has begun a formal review of accessory dwelling units and will draft ordinances and guidelines for the city.
At the board meeting, a member reporting on the commission’s work said Will Stubbs of the Planning and Zoning Commission gave a presentation that started the discussion on accessory dwelling units, and that the commission will continue considering how to regulate them for Smithville.
The report said the commission’s conversation focused on starting a process to “look at those for the city and provide creating some ordinances and some guidelines.” The board member who delivered the report urged aldermen to review the presentation and any PowerPoint slides before next month’s meeting so that the item can be discussed again and — if necessary — returned for additional time. No formal action or ordinance was taken at the Board of Aldermen meeting.
Planning and Zoning’s work on accessory dwelling units will return to the board as part of the regular agenda; the commission indicated it will continue the conversation at its next meeting and bring recommended language and guidelines back to the Board of Aldermen for consideration.
