Smithville staff recommends holding Green for Life rate increase at 1.7% by extending contract

City staff told the Board of Aldermen that the current residential/commercial trash contract with Green for Life (GFL) runs through October 2026 and that a negotiated increase for 2026 is 1.7 percent. Staff said an earlier proposal was substantially higher and credited Myra (city staff) with securing the reduced rate.
Under the 1.7% scenario staff presented, the regular residential rate would rise from $20.50 to $20.85 and the senior rate from $17.43 to $17.73. Staff also reported that GFL said it would hold the same 1.7% increase for 2027 if the city executes an additional one-year extension.
Aldermen discussed the contract timing and noted that the city must notify GFL by February 2026 if it wants the city to extend rather than re-bid. Several members favored locking in the extension to avoid a potentially larger increase in the next procurement cycle; one alderman said commercial trash bills around the city had recently increased substantially.
One alderman asked staff to bring back a resolution for formal board concurrence; staff indicated they will prepare the resolution for a future meeting. No formal contract authorization vote was taken at the work session.
