Resident asks Yakima County commissioners to schedule review of regional clean air agency

A resident asked the Yakima County Board of Commissioners on May 8 to schedule a work session to examine “problems within the Yakima regional clean air agency.”
The request came during the board’s public comment period at the work session. Jean, a resident who identified herself during the meeting, told commissioners she had asked the board at a prior meeting to consider the issue and had sent “three emails within the last month regarding budget issues with the Clean Air Agency.”
“ I attended your board meeting last Tuesday and I asked, all of you to schedule a work session that would look at, problems within the Yakima regional clean air agency,” Jean said. “So I’m here today to ask if you, considered my request and hopefully the answer is yes.”
Julie, the clerk of the board, read the public-comment procedure and said the comment period is not for back-and-forth engagement with commissioners. “If I may just offer the public comment is not for engaging with the board, and it’s more appropriate that the questions be asked directly to a commissioner,” she said.
Commissioner McKinney (identified in the meeting as one of the board’s three commissioners) acknowledged receiving Jean’s request and said the board would follow up. “I will, confer with, the clerk of the board, and we’ll we’ll get back to you,” McKinney said.
No formal action was taken at the work session to schedule a review or set a date; the remarks constituted a public request that commissioners said they would consider and respond to afterward. The board proceeded to its agenda review without scheduling the requested work session.
The comment was the only public speaker during the meeting’s public-comment period and the request was recorded as a question for follow-up by commissioners and staff.
