Commissioners highlight recycling expansion, cultural grants and new park and volunteer programs

Somerset County commissioners used the Feb. 11 work session to report a range of community program updates, including new recycling capacity, cultural and heritage grants, parks reservations and a workforce partnership launched at Raritan Valley Community College.

County officials said the public works department received two new recycling trucks that will allow the county to add roughly 1,000 homes to its dual‑stream recycling route. Staff explained the dual‑stream process keeps recyclables cleaner for market purposes even when the vehicle’s hopper may appear single‑loaded; the county’s public information office plans outreach graphics to explain the trucks’ split‑body collection.

Commissioners noted the county’s shared‑services marketplace handled 990 requests so far this fiscal year, short of a stated goal of 1,000 requests, and that the county remains an active user of shared services with municipalities. County cultural staff reported docent training for historic sites drew about 100 applicants for 30 open slots, and the county will award 17 local arts grants and seven history grants funded by the State of New Jersey.

Parks officials announced a Pickleball Season Pass program for North Branch Park. Pass sales begin March 1 and the season starts March 15; the fee will be $50 for Somerset County residents and $100 for nonresident county residents, with a guest policy for pass holders. County gazebo and picnic grove reservations for the summer season also open March 1 online.

Commissioners reported attending the launch of New Jersey Bio Futures at Raritan Valley Community College, a private‑public workforce development partnership led by Raritan Valley Community College, Middlesex College and Mercer County College, and supported by a $1,000,000 contribution from Johnson & Johnson to develop talent for the cell‑and‑gene therapeutics sector. County attendees described the initiative as an effort to strengthen the local workforce pipeline to meet biotechnology employer needs.

The county’s human services newsletter was highlighted for job listings and volunteer opportunities, including the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) for people 55 and older. County staff gave contact information for mental‑health resources: Richard Hall Community Health and Wellness Center access at (908) 253‑3165, Bridgeway Psychiatric Emergency Screening Service (PES) at (908) 526‑4100 for mobile outreach, and the national suicide/crisis line at 988.
