Council upholds personnel hearing decision despite member objections over process and evidence

The Huntsville City Council voted on May 8 to uphold the decision of a personnel hearing concerning Katrina Brady. The motion to uphold the hearing was made by Dr. Robinson and seconded by Councilman David Little.

Council member Enolia Watkins spoke strongly against upholding the decision, saying she had “serious concerns” about the hearing record and the timeliness and organization of materials provided to council. Watkins said the evidence “was not overwhelming” and that she believed the individual “did not get a fair shake.”

Watkins described a specific incident she found troubling: a lactating employee who was offered an office to use and later was reprimanded for using it, and concerns about being written up for absences when employee health had sent the person home. “I don't see how anybody sitting up here could vote otherwise because it was not overwhelming, and an individual was clearly being targeted,” Watkins said.

The roll-call portion of the discussion recorded votes as follows during that item: Mr. Kling—Aye; Dr. Robinson—Aye; Ms. Watkins—No; Mr. Little—No. The council president indicated the motion and decision stand; the decision recorded at the meeting is that the hearing outcome was upheld.
