Council sets April 16 public hearing for proposed precinct boundary changes

The Snohomish County Council voted unanimously April 2 to set the time and date for a public hearing on Ordinance 25-026, which would adopt voting precinct boundary changes proposed by the county auditor and amend Chapter 2.47 of the Snohomish County Code.
Jim Martin, council staff, said the ordinance would adopt changes the Snohomish County Auditor proposed to address reduced voter counts in 32 precincts and annexations in two precincts. The auditor’s proposal creates 11 new precincts, bringing the county total to 869 precincts. Martin said the changes affect Council District 1 (plus six precincts), District 3 (plus two), District 4 (plus one) and District 5 (plus two).
When asked about outreach, Martin deferred to the auditor. Auditor Phil Fell (identified in the meeting) said the auditor’s office does not specifically reach out to individual legislative districts; instead it considers precinct committee officer assignments and aims to minimize boundary changes. Fell said information is available for parties who want to comment on specific precinct changes.
A motion to set the council public hearing for Wednesday, April 16, at 10:30 a.m. was made and seconded; the council voted unanimously to set the hearing.
The ordinance language as presented indicates the changes are pursuant to state law (RCW) and Snohomish County code; the hearing will provide the public an opportunity to comment before the council takes a final vote.
