Snohomish County Council proclaims April 19, 2025, CDH Awareness Day after family testimony

Snohomish County Council on Wednesday unanimously approved Resolution 25-010 recognizing April 19, 2025, as Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia (CDH) Awareness Day after a parent described her family’s experience with the condition.

The proclamation followed public comment from Cassie, a Snohomish County resident whose daughter was diagnosed in utero with CDH. Cassie told the council that her daughter was diagnosed at about 19 weeks of pregnancy, underwent surgery to repair the CDH at 4 days old, spent nearly two months in the neonatal intensive care unit and was able to go home after that hospitalization. Cassie said the child is now about 10 years old and continues to face ongoing medical challenges. "These 10 years have been so beautiful, but also really challenging as her mom and very hard on our girl," Cassie said.

The council moved and seconded the measure and approved it by voice vote with no recorded nays or abstentions. The resolution formally recognizes April 19, 2025, as CDH Awareness Day in Snohomish County to raise awareness of congenital diaphragmatic hernia and the families it affects.

Council members also expressed appreciation for Cassie’s remarks during the meeting’s public comment period. The meeting record shows the council then approved the consent agenda and administrative matters, each by unanimous voice vote.
