High school auditorium, CTE work advance; contractor change orders tap contingency

What happened: construction crews erected full scaffolding inside the auditorium to remove and replace ductwork, sprinkler piping and sound panels; crews also removed the auditorium's stage floor to replace failing drain lines. In C‑hall, new classroom ceilings, floors, cabinets and windows were installed, and trade work continues in the auto shop and agricultural suites.
Contingencies and change orders Operations staff and project leads said the original contingency has been drawn down by unanticipated site and infrastructure repairs discovered during demolition. "We started with about $5,200,000 and we're down about 1.3 in contingency," a project manager said, referring to major change orders for sewer and structural repairs. The board was told much of the work was needed to avoid short‑term fixes that would require additional work within a few years.
Why it matters: the renovation preserves and upgrades CTE spaces that remain open during construction (auto, ag, culinary and cosmetology) and aims to modernize the auditorium and circulation areas. Staff said the site work and a pending VDOT decision about turn lanes could affect final costs and the sequencing of remaining work.
Ending: project staff said most C‑hall work should be complete by May and that they will report further on contingency use and any additional change orders tied to VDOT site requirements.
