Mecklenburg County schools honor April senior, All‑State musician and regional art winners

Mecklenburg County High School named Jada Rose Walker its April senior of the month. "I would like to recognize my mom, my hardworking mom, and my hardworking grandma and great grandma," Walker said, thanking family members who supported her. The board noted she is active in FBLA and FCCLA, serves as Phoenix Café manager, is senior class treasurer for the class of 2025 and plans to attend Virginia State University to major in mass communication with a minor in event management.
Cameron Mingy, band director for Mecklenburg County High School and Middle School, announced the division's marching and concert bands received superior ratings and that the program earned a Virginia Honor Band distinction — the first time since at least 2016 for the district under the current configuration. Mingy said the recognition "reflects the countless hours of rehearsal, commitment and passion for music from these amazing students." He introduced students Jontre Stone, Molly Deal and Maggie Deal who attended with parents.
Molly Deal was recognized for earning a seat in the All‑State band after a competitive audition process; Mingy said she competed against more than 100 clarinetists and won a ranked chair that secured her place in the All‑State ensemble. The band director said the All‑State concert will be held Saturday at 1:15 p.m. at the Greater Richmond Convention Center.
The board also praised students who placed in the Virginia School Boards Association (VSBA) art contest: middle‑ and high‑school students placed in their divisions, and an elementary student, Tianna Blackwell of Chase City Elementary, will have her artwork displayed in the VSBA exhibition. Presenters said local art teachers and parents supported the work and that art teachers are extracting strong results from students across grade levels.
No formal board action was required for the recognitions; the presentations were celebratory highlights on the public agenda.
