The Halifax County Public Schools Board of Education approved updated pay tables that incorporate a 3% increase to employee pay steps and discussed a possible separate $1,000 state bonus that remains contingent on the governor’s action.
Dr. Buckleau, a staff member presenting financial updates to the board, said the division’s proposed budget included a 3% increase for employees and that the updated pay tables reflect that change. “We, sent to the board of supervisors, had a 3% increase for all employees of Halifax County Public Schools,” she said while asking the board to approve the tables.
Board members voted in favor of the pay tables. The approved tables move each employee’s current step by the 3% increase as presented.
Board members also asked about a $1,000 bonus included in the governor’s budget proposal. The board was told that the bonus was “on the governor’s desk currently” and, if approved, division staff would have flexibility on timing but that payments likely would be issued after the school year because state funds typically are released near fiscal year end. A board member asked who would be eligible if the bonus is approved; staff said the proposed bonus would cover contracted full-time and contracted part-time employees of Halifax County Public Schools but would exclude substitutes and daily-wage employees.
Officials emphasized the state bonus is contingent on the governor’s approval and release of funds. “If he doesn’t send it to us, we would not be able to afford to give it,” a staff member said.
Why it matters: The 3% pay-table adjustment affects salary schedules used for payroll and budgeting across positions in the division; the state bonus, if approved, would be an additional, separate payment and not a guaranteed entitlement unless the governor signs it and funds are released.
The division will return with final figures for tax-savings and any bonus implementation details once the governor’s action and contract completion milestones are clearer.
