Accomack school board approves $2,000 retention bonuses, OKs $1.8M in carryover spending contingent on state aid

The Accomack County School Board on April 1 voted to approve a carryover spending package for fiscal 2026 that includes $2,000 retention bonuses for eligible employees, contingent on a $500,000 state contribution from the governor's surplus.

Board members approved the package after extended debate over whether to set the bonus at $2,000 or a lower amount such as $1,000. The motion as passed was described on the record as approval “as presented” and noted the board would use the state allocation to offset part of the local cost. The board's roll call recorded approval by each district representative.

The package as presented includes carryover allocations for multiple capital and maintenance items, textbook adoptions and a plan to apply state funds tied to Standards of Quality (SOQ) positions to reduce the board’s net cost for retention incentives.
