The operations director said crews completed major plumbing and masonry work in the former C Hall (to be rebranded the 200 wing), installed new lighting in the gym, replaced drains under the cosmetology area during winter break with no program disruption, and installed ticket and assistant-principal office windows near the auditorium.
Staff warned that unforeseen conditions in older parts of the building — notably deteriorated piping and other items not visible during earlier design phases — have produced change orders that reduced the project contingency. Examples included extensive kitchen system replacement (roughly three-quarters of a million dollars), stormwater and wastewater line replacements discovered under slabs, and other items that were not in the original scope. The operations presentation estimated roughly $3.15 million in change orders to date, reducing available contingency funds.
District staff said they prioritized long-term fixes to avoid repeated future work, even though those choices increased near-term costs. The board and operations staff agreed the strategy of replacing aging infrastructure to achieve a 20-to-30-year solution made fiscal sense despite current contingency impacts.
No vote was taken; operations will continue to provide construction updates and budget impacts to the board.
