City staff updated Denison City Council on the 2025 “Big Event,” the city’s volunteer service day, reporting higher early demand from residents in need and an ongoing call for volunteer and sponsor support.
Robert Lee, the staff presenter, said the Big Event—an annual city-coordinated volunteer day—served about 50 locations in 2024 with more than 300 volunteers. Applications for 2025 opened in January; as of the council meeting Lee said staff had received 45 requests for assistance (compared with five at the same time last year) and four volunteer sign-ups, noting the program will accept the first 50 resident applications and then place later requests on a waiting list.
Lee said the program covers projects such as lawn care, painting, fence repair and other outdoor assistance tasks and that sponsor contributions pay for supplies, volunteer food and other event expenses. He said the city is actively seeking sponsors and partners to ensure staff can supply materials and support the volunteers on the event day. Council members praised the program’s community impact and encouraged continued volunteer recruitment and sponsorship outreach.
Lee said the event is planned for March and that staff will continue outreach to ensure volunteer capacity meets application demand.
