The Historic Preservation Board on Feb. 4 approved a certificate of appropriateness for a new stage and a red‑brick green room at Heritage Park (case spoken as 2020Five-nineH), a city-led element of the D3 phase 2 project.
Mary (staff) told the board the green room building is designed to reference a railroad roundhouse: the plan includes arched brick openings on the green room and a central track motif in the paving where a turntable would have sat historically. Fanchon Stearns (project representative) said, “it is supposed to be reminiscent of a roundhouse,” and described the intent to create a flexible public space that can serve casual daytime users and expand into the street for larger events.
Design details discussed at the hearing include a red brick green room with arched openings, a brick wall behind the stage faced in gray brick to help with sound mitigation, and a weather station with a lightning-protection indicator and siren equipment because of anticipated public use. Board members asked about seating and whether the design included permanent seating or movable cafe tables; Stearns said bistro tables and chairs and the stage steps are intended to provide both casual seating and event seating when required.
A motion to approve the certificate of appropriateness for the stage and green room was made and the board approved it by voice vote (“Aye”).
