City plans composite decking and metal rail replacement for Waterloo Lake trestle bridge

Parks staff said the long-overdue rehabilitation of the Waterloo Lake trestle bridge will remove rotting wood, sandblast the structural elements and install composite decking with a 42-inch-high black metal railing. A contractor is in place and staff said they are finalizing contract details.
Staff described prep work that includes sandblasting with EPA-compliant containment measures because the bridge spans water. After sandblasting, staff said they will repaint the bridge in its original color and replace wooden planks and rails with composite deck boards and fabricated metal railing to improve longevity and reduce future maintenance. Staff said composite planks come in precut fabricated sizes, which they expect will simplify future repairs.
The project is intended to improve safety and reduce ongoing maintenance; staff said the work will allow the department to replace decking as needed without extensive on-site cutting and waste.
No formal vote was recorded; the commission received the maintenance report.
