Parks staff reported they submitted an application to Texas Parks and Wildlife’s non-motorized recreation trails grant program seeking $300,000 to build a trailhead parking lot and associated amenities. The application, staff said, includes a council-approved local match and a combination of city funds and staff labor if the grant is awarded.
If funded, the project would build a 6,000-square-foot parking area providing nine parking spaces, including one accessible space. The proposed scope includes an elevated walkway through a portion of the property, a staircase and landing providing access to the trailhead near the dog park entrance, and a pavilion planned for phase two because of funding limitations. Staff noted the site runs through a flood channel and said they are coordinating with Public Works’ surface water engineer to address drainage and permitting requirements.
Staff emphasized the project’s goal of reducing roadside parking and improving safety and convenience for trail users. The application status remains pending; staff said they expect to know more around June.
No formal commission action was taken beyond receiving the report.
