Board approves Clara Bryant mural on 110 South Fannin Street, requires maintenance commitment

The Historic Preservation Board on March 18 approved a proposal to install a mural honoring jazz musician Clara Bryant on the side (alley) elevation of the building at 110 South Fannin Street.
Staff told the board the mural will be painted on removable panels that will be placed over a bricked-in former roll-up door rather than painted directly on unpainted brick. The board heard that Clara Bryant’s sons plan to visit Denison on May 30 to film a documentary about her life, and the applicant said they hope to have the mural in place by that date. Staff recommended approval, and the design committee and Main Street review also approved the proposal.
Board members asked about long-term maintenance. Staff said applicants sign a statement agreeing to a five-year maintenance commitment; the city’s minimum property standards give the city recourse if an approved mural is not maintained.
A motion to approve the mural — case number 2025-017H — passed on a voice vote. Meeting notes record that the motion was made and that Mr. Joukowsky seconded; the minutes do not record a roll-call tally.
Members praised the project as a way to cover discolored brick and to honor a woman of color from Denison’s musical history. One board member noted that mural panels are a creative alternative when brick cannot be painted directly.
