The Denison Historic Preservation Commission on May 6 approved a certificate of appropriateness to add a single aluminum-and-glass entry door on the Fannin Street side of the building at 500 West Main (case 2025-025H).
Staff described the building as a contributing structure in the historic district and said the existing glass façade dates to about 1961. The applicant proposed a door that matches the existing materials and said the new entrance is intended to provide retail access while sidewalk work temporarily affects the main entry. Staff recommended approval, noting the alteration could be reversed and that rear-alley access leads to a freight elevator that building officials and the fire marshal prefer not to be used for general public egress for safety reasons.
"It can be reversed," a staff member said when commissioners asked whether the glass could be restored if necessary. Applicant CJ Reese said she and her husband, Bill Reese, worked with the installer and that they would submit a separate application if they want graphics for the new door similar to their front-door hours and business name.
A motion to approve the certificate passed with commissioners voting in favor. The commission's approval is conditioned on using materials consistent with the existing façade and on the applicant pursuing any signage or graphics through the separate administrative application process.
