Cemetery staff presented a plan for a Fairview Cemetery “clean sweep” at the April 21 council meeting, proposing a cleanup period from Jan. 12 through March 20, 2026, and describing notification and documentation procedures.
Chip Edgar, who gave the project update, said the sweep is intended to address damaged or unsightly items, offensive material, items placed outside allowed areas and unauthorized plantings. “The purpose of this clean sweep is a clean up effort to preserve the beauty and dignity of Fairview Cemetery,” Edgar told council.
Staff said they plan to begin public notifications about six months before the cleanup, using on-site signage, social media and the city website; cemetery staff acknowledged contact information for some plot owners is incomplete and said they will notify those for whom they have reliable contact details. Staff estimated they could complete three to four cemetery blocks per week and noted there are 36 blocks in total. Sites slated for removal or correction will be photographed before and after, and any collected valuables will be stored on-site for 90 days after cleanup completion for retrieval.
Edgar said the cemetery advisory board supported the plan at its March 4 meeting. The presentation was an informational project update; no council action was required or taken.
Staff said notifications likely will begin in late June or early July to ensure at least six months’ notice to the public, and they noted they may start even earlier if feasible.
