Historic preservation commission approves awning at 325 West Main

The Denison Historic Preservation Commission on May 6 approved a certificate of appropriateness for an awning above the rear double-door entrance at 325 West Main.

The approval follows staff review that the proposed awning would match existing fabric and color schemes used on nearby storefronts and would not extend into the alleyway. Applicant Bob Graham said he will work with his retail tenant on any lettering or graphics for the awning and asked whether those graphics would require separate approval. Staff responded that graphics would be handled administratively and that a design guide governs acceptable awning content.

"There is guidance for what could be on it—names, not logos, not advertisements," Donna, a staff member, said during the meeting. Staff also noted the alleyway-depth limit that applies to awnings along the rear entrances and said the proposed awning meets that requirement.

The applicant provided a paper example showing the awning would resemble Emily's Kitchen's awning on the adjacent storefront but would cover only the double-door opening. Staff said signage for the address was administratively approved and was not part of the awning approval.

A motion to approve the certificate passed with the commission voting in favor.

Commissioners and staff said the project team should follow the design guide and submit final graphic designs for administrative review before installation.
