Denison Arts Council reports $125,000 annual budget, programming and tourism gains to city council

The Denison Arts Council told the City Council Monday it is operating on a $125,000 annual budget, has received about $63,000 in hotel-occupancy-tax allocations in the first six months, and continues to invest in advertising, festivals and public art to grow tourism.
Cindy Salem, president of the Denison Arts Council, said the council intentionally held over about $25,000 for Dia de los Muertos and fall marketing, and provided a breakdown of the annual budget that includes $30,000 for cultural-district advertising and $20,000 for the council’s office. The council also budgets $15,000 for the fall festival, $6,000 for the spring festival, $5,000 for public art and $5,000 for performing arts, and $25,000 for labor and contracted services.
Salem described progress on the council’s storefront gallery, expanded website content and a public-art repository and map designed to help visitors locate murals and installations. She cited a Placer data report showing about 7,000 people downtown during Dia de los Muertos, an average dwell time of about 135 minutes and about 40% of attendees from outside Grayson County. The council said it will pursue Texas Commission on the Arts grants and other funding to supplement advertising.
The Arts Council also previewed the North Texas Arts Festival, scheduled with artist move-in on the 16th and show dates on the 17th and 18th; organizers said the festival will include out-of-area artists, live performance, demonstrations and fiber-arts programming.
Council members thanked the Arts Council for the quarterly update and for its work to support downtown tourism and cultural programming.
