Putnam County approves semiannual mortgage-tax distribution to towns and villages

The Putnam County Legislature on Tuesday approved the semiannual mortgage-tax report covering Oct. 1, 2024, through March 31, 2025, and authorized disbursements to towns and villages as listed in the report presented to the body.

The clerk read the allocations for each municipality. The amounts announced in the session were: Town of Carmel $486,067.97; Town of Kent $217,380.76; Town of Patterson $154,263.39; Village of Cold Spring $12,744.08; Village of Nelsonville $3,604.86; Town of Philipstown $151,836.90; Town of Putnam Valley $1,722,159.40; Village of Brewster $7,241.41; Town of Southeast $238,811.41. A grand total figure was read during the meeting.

A legislator noted that while the allocation appears ministerial, some members recused themselves from votes on items affecting their municipalities. The legislature then conducted a roll-call vote and carried the measure.

Mortgage-tax distributions provide routine revenue to towns and villages for general municipal purposes. Approving semiannual payouts ensures towns and villages receive their share of mortgage-tax revenue according to state and county reporting periods.
