Police Chief LaPree told the Harahan City Council on Jan. 16 that the department received 730 calls for service in December, including 19 traffic accidents and 128 citations issued.
LaPree provided a breakdown of patrol activity: 104 combined business and residential checks, 1,127 traffic-enforcement contacts (including 267 stationary traffic-enforcement actions), and 75 medical calls for service. He said medical calls continue to rise, noting the city’s elderly population and the department’s practice of responding to assist emergency medical services when needed.
The chief reported 50 miscellaneous arrests resulting in 80 charges: four felonies, 44 misdemeanors and two driving-while-intoxicated arrests. He also said there were two narcotics arrests (one felony, one city charge), three nonresidential burglaries, six theft/shoplifting incidents, one identity-theft report and three assaults.
LaPree urged residents to hang up on suspected scam calls and to contact the Harahan Police Department if they suspect fraudulent activity; he said callers posing as bank representatives have been part of ongoing scams. He also noted several officers are in special response-team training following a New Year’s Day incident, and that Harahan officers assisted Jefferson Parish and New Orleans agencies during security operations at a recent Sugar Bowl event.
The chief reiterated the department is hiring and encouraged applicants to contact the Harahan Police Department for applications for officers and jailers.
