Fire chief: two new trucks en route; station renovations funded by grant and budget

Fire Chief Luis Romero told the Public Safety Committee on Feb. 10 that one of the department’s new apparatus vehicles is expected to arrive for local inspection after traveling to Port Arthur, and that upcoming station renovations will be funded in part by a $600,000 grant and about $1,015,000 from the department budget.
Romero said the department logged 69 total calls in January and summarized that preparations for truck delivery and station work have progressed. He said one of the five trucks purchased made a delivery stop in Port Arthur for final inspection and that the city expects to take delivery in the coming weeks. "One of the 5 trucks made it to Port Arthur last week...we're gonna take delivery of them," he said.
Romero outlined a sequencing plan: South Crowley station work is nearly complete and once crews return, personnel will shift so North Crowley can be gutted and renovated. Romero told the committee the purchases and renovations will use the $600,000 grant along with approximately $1,015,000 drawn from the department’s budget to complete the work.
Council members discussed mileage and warranty questions about apparatus driven to Port Arthur by a vendor driver. A staff member explained that, as with other vehicle purchases, warranty periods are calculated from the manufacturer’s odometer/mileage baseline at delivery; the city and the chief said they expected typical warranty protections would apply.
No new ordinances or appropriations were voted at the Public Safety committee meeting; the chief said he planned to file for an extension on a related rating packet and to ensure the trucks and station work were completed correctly before placing renovated facilities back in service.
