Crowley committee approves resolution to apply for LGAP public-works grant

Crowley City Council’s Public Works Committee on Jan. 14 approved a resolution authorizing the mayor to submit an application to the Office of Community Development’s Local Government Assistance Program (LGAP) for public-works equipment and drainage and sidewalk improvements.

City Engineer Tim Mader read the resolution title into the record and said the application will cover public-works equipment and, if needed, drainage and sidewalk work. “A resolution authorizing and directing the mayor to submit for and on behalf of the city of Crowley an application to the fiscal year 2024, 2025 Office of Community Development’s Local Government Assistance Program known as LGAP, pertaining to public works equipment and drainage and sidewalk improvements,” Mader said.

Why it matters: LGAP is a recurring state reimbursement grant the city applies for annually. Mader told the committee the awards typically run in the mid-teens of thousands of dollars and that the current agreement the city is waiting on from the state is for just over $12,000; because LGAP is reimbursement-based, the city must wait for the signed state agreement before spending the funds. “It’s a great grant,” Mader said, noting there is no local match requirement.

Action and vote: Alderman Sandy moved to approve the resolution and Alderman Brad seconded. Committee members called for the question and the motion passed.

Next steps: The mayor will sign and submit the application; the city will await the state’s executed agreement before drawing reimbursement. Mader encouraged council members with questions to contact his office before the next meeting.
