Council approves replacement backhoe after insurance payout

The City of Broussard Council on Feb. 25 approved Resolution number 827-25 to amend the February 2025 operating budget for streets capital outlay to purchase a replacement backhoe after the previous machine was damaged during snow-clearing operations.
Mel, a staff member, told the council that “we had a 2013 bridal case backhoe that got damaged in the snowstorm and the guy was clearing the road and and the bucket hit a, a manhole. And, honestly, we were gonna ask for a replacement for it in June, but it, the damage to the backhoe was more than the backhoe was worth.” Mel said the insurance company determined the backhoe was not worth repairing and that the total replacement cost is about $140,000 and the city received roughly $38,000 from the insurance claim.
There was no public comment on the item. The council called the question and members representing Districts 2, 3, 5 and 6 voted yes; the motion was approved.
The resolution authorizes the budget amendment to cover the purchase from the streets capital outlay allocation. No additional funding sources or vendor names were specified during the discussion.
