Board approves $405,000 budget amendment for nine additional sheriff vehicles

The Culpeper County Board of Supervisors voted Feb. 4 to approve a $405,000 budget amendment to allow the Sheriff's Office to purchase nine additional vehicles in fiscal year 2025.
County Administrator Sam McLaren introduced the item, saying the appropriation uses carryover funds from fiscal 2024 plus roughly $43,000 in proceeds from the sale of various items. "There were funds left over from FY '24," McLaren said, and those funds plus sale proceeds would be used to buy nine vehicles and help establish a systematic rotation plan.
Sheriff Chilton told the board the department previously purchased 12 new vehicles and still has about 18 cars with more than 200,000 miles. "So right now we're using band aids to keep them together, but we're gonna work our way through it until we get the program set," he said.
Supervisor discussion touched on a prior lease program for vehicles; the sheriff said leases previously used had not produced sufficient residual value at lease end and the department now expects to keep take‑home cars longer. After brief discussion the board approved the budget amendment on a voice vote.
