Board approves multiple elementary‑school boundary changes, delays Dudley move amid growth concerns

The Franklin County School Board approved a package of elementary‑school boundary adjustments Monday but delayed one recommended change after members raised questions about near‑term housing growth.
Dr. Nestor presented the rezoning maps and explained the recommended moves: students from Boones Mill attendance areas (including Cejay’s Mountain and Dylans Mill) will be reassigned to Callaway Elementary; portions of Windy Gap attendance areas (for example Webb Mountain and Rock Lily areas) will move to Boones Mill; portions of Lee Wade will shift to Rocky Mount Elementary (including the Diamond Avenue extension) and a small portion from Lee Wade in Rocky Mount will move to Glade Hill; administrators recommended, but the board deferred, moving the Ponderosa subdivision from Dudley to Glade Hill to allow time to monitor student counts and anticipated growth.
Board members said they were comfortable approving the majority of the boundary changes now but expressed concern about changing Dudley’s boundaries too quickly in a neighborhood showing new residential growth. Administration noted it could also consider limiting future out‑of‑zone transfer approvals to Dudley as a short‑term measure if the board wished to preserve capacity.
The motion to approve the rezoning package excluding the Dudley‑to‑Glade Hill transfer passed on roll call.
