Cyclist urges city to fix bike parking; mayor says staff will study grants and code changes

MJ Hogue, who gave his address as 415 Second Street, told the council that “a big part of what makes cycling viable is having a reliable place to park when you get there” and urged action because existing bicycle parking makes it difficult to rely on bicycling for errands. Hogue asked for an update on code changes the mayor had previously mentioned.
Mayor Ira Strimble responded that staff will explore creating a public-private small-grant pilot to help businesses add bicycle parking and that the council would likely route the idea through a council subcommittee for vetting. Strimble also said the council could review code changes and asked Hogue to submit his suggestions so staff could include them in the subcommittee discussion.
No formal action was taken at the May 5 meeting; council members said they would review the resident’s materials and consider both grant and code-change options.
