Resident asks Camden County commissioners to press NJDOT to plant trees along Route 70 median

A Cherry Hill resident told the Camden County Board of Commissioners she wants county help persuading the New Jersey Department of Transportation to include trees in a Route 70 median replanting plan.
Martha Wright, of 200 Munn Lane in Cherry Hill, said the DOT removed more than 300 trees as part of the corridor improvement project and that the current replanting plan calls for shrubs rather than trees. Wright proposed planting Nanking cherry trees along the medians because, she said, they are weather tolerant, do not grow excessively tall and provide ornamental flowers and berries for birds.
A county official at the meeting said the county had convened a meeting with DOT, the contractor and township officials later in the month and that Wright’s request would be added to the agenda and forwarded to the DOT commissioner. Wright said she would submit a written proposal with species recommendations.
Why it matters: The request concerns visual character and local landscaping along a busy county corridor; the DOT controls the project, and Wright asked the county to act as an intermediary with the state agency.
No formal vote or funding commitment was recorded at the meeting.
